It needs to be repaired before roadworthy. I'd rather sell it to be restored than have it parted out, but that's your choice. If you can do the work yourself it will be very worthwhile. What it needs are the head gaskets and rear seal on the engine, It also needs brakes, and struts for the suspension. It also needs a new rear wiper motor and lift struts for the rear hatchback.

It is worth doing the work because the Subaru Foresters hold their high resale value and you will have a good car with new parts to last a long time. There is no better car on the road than the Subaru Forester for winter driving in upstate NY. It will pass all the 4WD cars stuck in the ice and snow.

I am thinking about having the engine replaced which would make the car cost about $3,500 after all the work was done.

That would still be a good price for a newly rebuilt Subaru Forester.

Very Nice van, I have driven her for 6 years and just wanted a change. Built in child safety seats (no more car seats!)(2), seats 7, seats are very easy to remove and put back in. van locks automatically when you put it in gear (super safety feature for those with youngchildren), New front brakes, just got it back yesterday with gas line replacement due to a pinhole leak, Dark Green in color. Things taken into account already on the price:

The exhaust has a leak...it is a tad bit loud, but not obnoxious. I've driven it like this for the last year.
The rocker panels beneath both sliding doors are starting to rust. I think it has two spots where it has rusted through. This does NOT affect the doors in any way. And is very minimal.

Other than those two things, this van is exceptional. I have never hestitated to load the grandkids in it and go. Handles very well in snow.
