"The Slave Power" John Elliot Cairnes (1863) CIVIL WAR ERA
156 Years Old!
"The Slave Power": It's Character, Career, and Probable Designs: Being an Attempt to Explain the Real Issues Involved in the American Conflict.
This is a second edition copy of a RARE book regarding slavery in the United States during the Civil War. It remains one of the most important works on the political economy of southern slavery. In fact, this book is still being published in 2019, most recently in May of this year.
This book looks from an outside perspective to illustrate how slavery functioned and was perceived by differing factions in the US. It also helped explain the essential cause of the Civil War and shape European policy concerning the struggle.
It is a very unique perspective and provides the historian a better understanding of the attitudes of this particular subject at the time of the Civil War. Unfortunately, over time history seems to be rewritten and misunderstandings and false analogies are developed to correspond with the ideological challenges of present day people. This is especially true given that over 157 year has passed since the first edition of this book was written.
There is some discoloration on the front board cover which may be an old water stain. Musty scent. Also, on the first pages, upper left section there is some damage, possibly worm damage.
The pages have some foxing on them but are all intact.
