Iron City forge was first established by German immigrants in the Pittsburgh area around 1859. Iron City Tool Works of Pittsburgh, PA, was a medium-sized manufacturer of hand tools for railroads, mines, blacksmithing, and stone masonry. Their logo, stamped deeply into all their tools, is a 6-pointed star with IRON CITY inside the star. The company became Kloman & Co. in 1862, and during the civil war the business boomed and ended up merging with a company owned by Carnegie (of Carnegie Steel fame).

This pickaxe was a barn find and needed a new handle as the original one was broken off. The head is 22" tip to tip - not following the curve. The wooden handle is 36" long. The head is marked ‘"IRON CITY” within a star. The pick axe head has one pointed end and one flat ends, as seen in the pictures. This antique tool is pre-owned.The original wooden handle has been replaced at some point and has no cracks, splits, or other damage. The handle has not been permanently attached, so the buyer can do so and cut the excess off. The pickaxe head is primitive/rustic and shows some wear but has no cracks, gouges, or other damage. The metal has an aged patina with pitting and has flecks of white paint near the center from storage on the farm. This is a heavy, solid, pickaxe, ready to put to work.
